Restaurant Review- Chapter One, Forres

Jay, his parents and I have just come from a lovely meal in Chapter One, an omni restaurant in Forres, in the north of Scotland, as we're up visiting them. His mum booked a table in advance asking if they could cater for two vegans in the party, and was told that was fine.

The Vegan Banquet, made specially for us, went above and beyond our expectations. We're so used to getting measly portions and still being hungry afterwards in omni restaurants so we were delighted to receive huge, enormous potions, which included a spicy mushroom and nut paella, mushrooms in a tomato-based sauce, stuffed tomatoes with a caramelised onion filling, asparagus-filled filo pastry and vegetable skewers. We gave his parents a little off our plates to try and they both found it delicious as well. :)

I'm going to award Chapter One an impressive 10/10 for their efforts, and I highly recommend booking in advance and paying them a visit if you're ever up this way.

Heya - I dunno if you remember me I was on ryl & veganfreaks for a while. But anyway - I might be moving up to scotland next year, and everyone keeps saying not to hope for any vegan food while I'm there! I remembered you and am glad it's clearly not the case, the resturaunt sounds lovley! Omni restruaunts can be really supprising. :) Hope you're ok xx

Hi Laura :) I'm good thanks, nice hearing from you! How've you been?
Whereabouts in Scotland are you thinking about moving to? If you're moving anywhere near Glasgow, you're in luck as there are no less than 3 vegan restaurants and several more vegetarian and omni restaurants that cater for vegans in the city, or if you're near Forres, then there are a few impressively-stocked health food shops, as well as free from sections in the local supermarkets- and of course Chapter One! :)
I've certainly never had much problems finding vegan food here- there are plenty alternatives to the national dishes of haggis or deep-fried mars bars!

Heya I've been really good thank you! How about you? :) Well I've applied to St Andrews university, but they haven't given me an offer yet so! I'm glad to hear there are lots of options, I think st andrews is in quite a small town but tbh I don't eat a lot of health-food-shop kinda things anyway! :) I had a feeling comments people had made were pretty inacurate but they worried me a little!! Sounds great :)

One day I want to buy one of those crazy expensive vegan marsbars, make my own batter, aquire a deep fat fryer and try that out for myself! :p

I've never actually been to St Andrews myself, but I'm pretty sure you'll find stuff to eat there!

Just done a quick google and apparently the uni has it's own vegetarian and vegan students' association- http://www.yourunion.net/content/index.php?page=22578, there's a meat-free health food store- http://www.happycow.net/reviews.php?id=15287 as well as a Holland and Barrett if you feel like treating yourself, plus a Tesco's and Morrisons, which both usually have a good selection of vegan stuff. :)

Kris, what a great meal! That was far above any I've ever had in an omni place, that's for sure! It just shows you that it can be done!

Does your site have a section with just the recipes so I don't have to scavenge through the whole site? Looks like alot of good ones, but I don't want to go through every blog entry.
Also, for us Americans, is there a conversion table on the site?
thanks, Mary in Oakland, CA

Hi Mary- I have a lot of the recipes listed in the first few posts here-

Sweets- http://crueltyfreekitchen.blogspot.com/2007/08/some-sweet-recipes.html

Main meals(entrees)-
http://crueltyfreekitchen.blogspot.com/2007/08/some-main-meal-recipes.html

Miscellaneous-
http://crueltyfreekitchen.blogspot.com/2007/08/some-starters-side-dishes-sauces-and.html

It isn't all of the recipes though, I really should figure out a way to organise them when I have time, although I'm not sure whether I'd be able to do that using blogger.

Here's a link to a conversion table for volumes- http://www.sciencemadesimple.net/volume.php

And weights- http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/weight_conversion.php

Hope that helps!
